It would be a wild day at Orange Speedway. Richard Petty took the pole position. He would battle with Dick Hutcherson and Tiny Lund for the top spot for the afternoon. During the race there would be two nasty accidents. First off, would be Jack Harden, he would go full bore over over the embankment and landed very deep in the wooded area. He would be taken to the hospital with back injuries. Secondly, Paul Dean Holt would take a tumble down the front stretch flipping end over end. He was taken to the hospital with neck injuries. Meanwhile, Richard Petty would get the lead from Tiny Lund in the 80th lap and would lead the final 87 circuits. Richard walked home with $1,500 in prize money.
