Richard and Lee Petty would be on the front row for this race. But it would be Lee the stronger of the two as he would lead flag to flag for the victory. During the race, Curtis Turner would break a driveshaft and would fly over the bank, into the trees. He would be unhurt.

But on September 18th it would be Richard Petty’s turn. Richard took the pole and then blistered the field duplicating the feat his father did in May. He lead from green to checkers. He would pocket $800 for his triumph.
