1-16-2018 Historic Race Car Donated
From Back in the Day (referencing the old Jalopy Speedway just off Oakdale Drive, Hillsboro, North Carolina). Now as you drive past this area on I-40, you are driving right through the center of the old dirt track. From this era 1956 - 1959, local racing history once again surfaces. This rare find was located outside of Hillsborough last month. This 1940 Chevy Coupe #11 driven by local racer Herbert Cates once raced at the old Jalopy Speedway. The North State Racing Association sanctioned these events. Thanks to Norman Horton, Hank Clapper, and Gerald Talbert, collectively they were able to get Herbert & Billy Cates to graciously donate this piece of local racing history to the Historic Speedway Group. This gem has a new lease on life and is proudly displayed on the front stretch of the Historic Occoneechee Speedway for all locals and racing enthusiasts to see. Thanks again to Gerald Talbert for providing the resources in order to bring this project to Occoneechee. FYI, there are several other race cars on display around Occoneechee Speedway. On January 16, 2018 i was asked to photograph this local racing history. Please enjoy the photos. Occoneechee-Orange Speedway Lives. Photos and article by Ed Sanseverino.
